Below is listed a summary of the services provided by the various agencies who are members of the Kennet Drug & Alcohol Working Group (DAWG)

Drug use prevention among young people (pdf, 128 KB)  (NHS paper)

AGENCY : Specialist Drug & Alcohol Service (North Wilts & Kennet)

FUNCTIONS

  • Offers drug and/or alcohol treatment, predominantly to those with most complex problems. Those with less complex problems will be seen by SWADS (alcohol) or BADAS (drugs)

  • Team comprises of Dr, nurses, drug & alcohol workers, social worker (priority to chart at serious risk of ill health – physical/mental health; pregnant drug/alcohol users; those with child protection concerns; complex needs).

  • Works in partnership with other agencies (BADAD, SWADS, Mental Health, Child Care SSD, General Practitioners, Housing, and progress2work)

  • Treatment is structured: counselling; prescribing; arranging day-care (provided in Trowbridge jointly with BADAS); arranging and overseeing residential, rehabilitation and in partial detoxification.

AGENCY : Secondary School Drug Adviser (LEA Health Team/WCC)

FUNCTIONS

  • Has overall responsibly for provision of advice, support and consultancy to all schools and other educational establishments on all matters concerned with drug education and strategic management of drug related incidents in all schools on behalf of the LEA.

  • With other members of the LEA Health Team we provide support to schools to enable teachers to deliver their Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship programme which includes input on various health related topics. The Healthy Schools Programmes is an important part of the team’s work

AGENCY : Shaw Trust - Progress2work

FUNCTIONS

  • A Job Centre Plus initiative for those individuals disadvantage in the labour market owing to drugs misuse.

  • The aim is to provide specialist help, support and guidance to explore options and help prepare individuals by empowerment and motivation, a suitable route paid employment or constructive activity such as voluntary work, education or training. The programme is for individuals who satisfy the following criteria:
    1.   A history of drug misuse
    2.   Have or are currently undergoing treatment and are no longer living in a chaotic lifestyle
    3.   Are extremely motivated, enthusiastic and positive towards the concept of work, training or education
    4.   On working age benefits

AGENCY : Supporting People

FUNCTIONS

  • The Supporting People Programme helps all kinds of people, including older people, young people, people with learning disabilities, homeless people, those escaping domestic violence, offenders and people with drug or alcohol problems, by funding low level, appropriate housing related support to people who need it.

  • Housing related support services improve people’s lives by helping them to live more independently and preventing problems that can often lead to hospitalisation, institutional care and homelessness

  • The types of support paid for by Supporting People include help arranging repairs; help enabling people to move into independent living; assistance with claiming benefits; arranging adaptations to properties; liaising with other agencies to help clients keep their accommodation etc.

  • Our funding comes from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and is administered by Wiltshire County Council (the Administering Authority). Our commissioning body is called the Partnership Board and partners include Probation, Health Service, social Services, District Council and Elected Members.

  • The programme has contracts with service providers and funds (or part funds) the support element of those providers. In the future, the Supporting People Partnership Board will commission services where gaps have been identified, providers will then tender to provide that service.This means that providers under the scheme may change from year to year

AGENCY : Swindon & Wiltshire Drug & Alcohol Service – Rural Services

FUNCTIONS

  1. Clients with alcohol misuse are taken on by Rural Services and offered the following:· Assessments to deal with alcohol misuse. This may lead on to a further referral
    ·  1-1 counselling for those experiencing alcohol misuse
    ·  1-1 counselling support to the carers of those experiencing alcohol misuse
    ·  Training workshops

  2. Work is carried out with other agencies involved in overall treatment of a client (BADAS, CLOUDS, DHI, and Specialist Teams).

  3. Self- referrals are taken.

  4. Counsellors are volunteers and work out of Marlborough, Devizes, Chippenham and Trowbridge.

AGENCY : Wiltshire’s Children & Families Service

FUNCTIONS

Wiltshire’s Children and Families Service is divided in to 3 district areas: North Wilts & Kennet, West Wilts, and Southern area.
It has a head count of 430 staff.

The service is delivered through 10 Fieldwork Teams, 3 Family Support Teams and 2 Children’s Disability Teams. The district area offices covering North Wilts & Kennet are:

  • Chippenham with 2 teams based at Hungerdown Lane (Chippenham and Corsham/Calne)

  • Wootton Basset team based at Manor House, Wootton Bassett

  • Kennet team based at Devizes

Children and Families Service in Wiltshire currently provides a wide range of care services to the public including:

  • Information, advice and advocacy

  • Direct work with children and their families

  • Help with managing children’s behaviour

  • Group work with parents and children

  • Practical support including help in the home

  • Care and supervision of Looked After Children

  • Child Protection – for children who are at risk of harm

  • Family Support Services – supporting families with children

Where alcohol and drugs affect parenting the Children and Families Service offers assistance and work with other agencies in line with children’s best interests and welfare.

AGENCY : Kennet Action for Single Homeless (KASH)

FUNCTIONS

Has been in Devizes since 1993 and originally set up as an advice centre for single homeless as problem identified by the Citizens Advice Bureau. It is unique in Kennet for providing a service for the 16-25 yrs age group.

It includes 3 houses funded by Supporting People :

  • The first house opened in 1996 to offer accommodation to 3 young men.

  • The second house opened in 1998 to offer accommodation to 3 young women

  • The third house, Ruth House is for people in recovery from drug/alcohol addiction opened in 2003. KASH works in partnership with DAT to provide support.

In July 2003 KASH merged with Alabare and its position as provider of supported housing strengthened.

In the past two years funding has been received for specific projects i.e. skills development.

FUNCTIONS

The primary objective of Health Promotion is to improve the health and wellbeing of people living and working in the area.The role includes the following in relation to drugs & alcohol :

  • To plan, implement and evaluate a range of health promotion initiatives and activities.

  • Develop, organise and co-ordinate the drugs and alcohol training programme for Wiltshire.

  • Update and develop directory of drug and alcohol services.

  • Work with alcohol reduction group on alcohol reduction campaigns.

  • To liaise and work with a range of key workers locally, regionally and nationally.

  • To monitor and update the drug and alcohol resources in the resource centre available for loan at the Kennet and North Wiltshire PCT and    West Wiltshire PCT Health Promotion Resource Centre.
