The council has set out the following key priority within its Corporate Strategy: "To preserve the employment opportunities in the area and to pursue economic activity".

In order to measure this objective we monitor employment statistics on a quarterly basis to ensure that the district continues to benefit from high employment rates.

The core aims of the economic development functions to be carried out by Kennet are:

  • To maintain a database of new business enquiries to support the retention of rural workspace.

  • To provide an up to date property guide in partnership with the Wiltshire & Swindon Economic Partnership for businesses considering re-locating.

  • To take enquiries from businesses and signpost them to relevant agencies.

  • The regeneration of the market towns.

  • The management of small industrial starter units.

  • A tourism development service for Kennet as a whole.

  • To continue to support the Development Trusts and their work improving the economic, environmental and social well-being of the district.

  • To continue to work with Wiltshire & Swindon Economic Partnership (WSEP) to ensure that close relationships are maintained with Wiltshire County Council (WCC), Business Link, Chambers of Commerce, and that duplicity of effort is avoided.

  • To keep a watching brief on the economic state of Kennet and the South West to allow time for appropriate intervention and/or change and review of policies.

  • To develop a Local Development Framework.
