The Councils Responsibility

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 places responsibilities on the Local Authority to collect, detain and dispose of stray dogs

If you find a dog.....

All dogs belong to someone. If you find a dog it is not yours to dispose of as you please - doing so carries an appropriate penalty on a summary conviction - a fine of up to £500

Anyone finding a dog must by law either  :

  • return it to its rightful owner (if known), or

  • inform Kennet District Council's Animal Welfare Officer, or

Don't let your dog be a stray !

Any dog allowed to stray on a highway or public place may be collected by the Animal Welfare Officer.

The fine for letting your dog stray could be anything up to £5,000

If your dog is picked up as a stray......

  • No dog will be released without a collar and tag

  • The dogs release fee will be £25 + the cost of kenneling + the cost of any vets fees

  • The Council is required to keep the dog for 7 days after that it may be sold, rehoused or destroyed

  • Dogs entering farm land or worrying livestock maybe legally destroyed by the farmer

  • The owner of any dog that causes a road accident, damage to a person, another dog or property is liable to pay any resultant costs or expense.

For more information or to report a lost or straying dog please contact the Animal Welfare Officer

on 01380 724911 or email us at kennet@kennet.gov.uk
