Workplace Noise

Noise at work is controlled by the Health and Safety Act and associated regulations. Employers have a duty to risk assess the work place and provide hearing protection if requested.

Further information can be found at the HSE website.

Industrial noise

The owners and operators of businesses are subject to the same nuisance regulations as private individuals. The measurement of noise from industry is also governed by a specific British Standard (BS 4142). The Environmental Health department has the equipment to undertake the necessary testing and analysis of such potential problems.

Commercial construction noise

Commercial construction work should be limited to the following hours 08:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 13:00 Saturday.  There should be no noisy working outside these hours or on Bank Holidays.  Other work may be done on site outside these hours, but it must not generate any disturbance beyond the site boundaries.

Alarms

The Environmental Health department does not deal with noise from car alarms. In the event of a security alarm sounding at a premises, either business or private, the first call should be to the Police to establish if a crime has been committed.

If the alarm is due to a malfunction and does not reset itself after 20 minutes then the department has powers to silence the alarm. Initially we will attempt to find a key-holder for the premises. If we have no key-holder listed either with the Police or us then we can arrange for a specialist company to silence the alarm. Any cost incurred by the Council in silencing the alarm will be charged to the building occupier. For this reason we strongly recommend that anyone with an alarm on his or her property or business register a key-holder on our secure database.
