National Type Approval Scheme

Q. - What is a National Type Approval Scheme
A - National Type Approval is seen as an effective building control service by the construction industry and government and has become a normal route to obtaining building regulation approval by many companies.

A developer can arrange to have standard house designs examined for compliance with the Building Regulations just once, and under the procedures of the scheme this approval is accepted by all other local authorities in England and Wales without any further checking except for site related matters.

The scheme also applies to commercial or industrial units and buildings, and System Approval for those companies and organisations that use standard details and methods of construction for use in a variety of building designs

Replacement Windows (FENSA Scheme)

Q. - Do I need approval to install replacement windows in my house?
A - Yes. From April 2002, all replacement glazing came within the scope of the Building Regulations. From then on, anyone who installs replacement windows or doors will have to comply with strict thermal performance standards.

Street Name and Numbering

Q. - How long does this procedure take?
A - As Building Control need to consult with emergency services and post office the process usually takes approximately four weeks from receipt of application to formal decision.

Q. - Is there a charge for Naming and Numbering?
A - No. There is currently no charge for the naming and numbering service. However the re-numbering of names and streets does attract a charge. This is because the Local Authority offers this service for the convenience of the public and has a duty to recover the costs borne for non-statutory service.

Q. - What do I do if my proposals are rejected?
A - If objections are received, it will not be possible to agree proposals and the application will be refused. You may make a further application with revised proposals for further consideration but you must not use any name or number which has not been agreed with the local authority

Q. - When do I need to apply for Naming and Numbering approval?
A - An application is required in the following circumstances:

  • When developing new streets and erecting new buildings
  • When wishing to change the name of an existing building (for example, when change in ownership occurs)
  • When converting or subdividing and existing premises which would result in new addresses.

Q. - Why do I need to make an application to change the name of my building?
A - The local authority aim to ensure that no duplication or confusion is likely to arise when emergency services are called to a premises or postal deliveries required. Failure to apply for formal approval of proposed changes to addresses could result in significant difficulties for emergency services and deliveries and could lead to enforcement action. It is in everybody's interest to have clear addresses.
