Scoping Report front cover image Kennet District Council is committed to promoting a better quality of life in Kennet through sustainable development. Under the Planning & Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 it is mandatory for the Council to subject all planning policies and proposals to be included in their local development framework to a sustainability appraisal. The sustainability appraisal is a tool to ensure that the Council's planning policies take account of nationally recognised principles and priorities for making progress towards sustainable development.

The way to carry out a sustainability appraisal has been set out by the Government and involves preparing a Scoping Report. The Scoping Report makes sure all locally relevant information is taken into account before the appraisal process begins and contains the following key elements:
  • information on the existing economic, social and environmental characteristics of the District;

  • a review of relevant plans and programmes which can influence decisions within the District;

  • a draft sustainability framework for the assessment of emerging policies and proposals in the local development framework and other policy documents.

It is important that the scoping report reflects the particular qualities and environment of Kennet. The only way to achieve this is through the help of all sections of the community. Please give us your views on the content of the scoping report to make the sustainability appraisal specific to Kennet.
