The Planning Services unit of Kennet District Council has responsibility for transport which forms part of the Forward Planning section. Transport has a major impact on people's lives and is very varied.

Transport plays a very important part in people's lives in Kennet as it provides access to services and facilities such as work, education and healthcare. Wiltshire County Council is the highway authority and is therefore responsible for road maintenance, changes to the highway network and public transport provision in conjunction with the private sector. However, Kennet supports a number of transport initiatives as well as fulfilling its own statutory obligations. Kennet is responsible for concessionary fares, taxi licensing, parking and supports community transport schemes. Our leisure services unit also encourages walking and cycling for the health benefits they provide and because they are a sustainable methods of transport.

As well as the obligations detailed above, as the planning authority, Kennet District Council has a responsibility to ensure that developers mitigate the impacts of traffic and transport that their development may create. In this respect, we work closely with Wiltshire County Council. The county council provides highway advice on planning applications and assists us to secure developer contributions for traffic and transport. We also work with the county council to promote initiatives that will encourage people to use alternatives to the private car. However Kennet District Council does recognise the rural nature of the district, and therefore the car will remain the dominant mode of transport.
