| King Charles II was
recommended by John Aubrey in 1663 to visit Avebury because it “…does
as much exceed in greatness the renowned Stonehenge as a Cathedral doeth
a parish Church…” The site has intrigued visitors for hundreds of years but the scholar and priest, William Stukely (1687-1765) recorded and sketched the site during the reign of King George II, leaving a valuable record. Alexander Keiller bought the Manor and excavated the sites thoroughly in the 1930s, adding bollards where stones were missing. He opened the Museum to display his finds. |
| An appeal was launched by the National Trust , which enabled this land-owning charity to buy 912 acres for permanent preservation in 1943, including the surrounding farms and cottages and Windmill Hill. The National Trust now owns and preserves 1,532 acres of land around Avebury. |
