Garden Waste Collection FAQ's
Last revised: 8 October 2008
Q. - Will the Council collect garden waste?
A. - Kennet District Council offers a fortnightly collection of green
garden waste from a 180 litre wheeled bin, for an annual charge of £28.00.
Kennet also has special offers on
home compost bins and food digesters.
Garden waste can also be taken to a
Household Recycling Centre free of charge where it will then be sent for composting.
Q. - What do I do if my green bin is full and I have some side material?
A. - Unfortunately, we are unable to collect any additional side material due to capacity on our vehicles. However, there is no limit on the number of green wheeled bins that you can order. If you wish to order an additional bin for your garden waste, please contact the Council on 01380 724911 or apply
online.
Alternatively, you could consider
home composting, which is the most environmentally sustainable method of disposing of your garden waste.
Q. - Where should I place my wheeled bin on collection day?
A. - Your green wheeled bin should be placed at the kerbside by 07:00hrs on the morning of collection. Only bins supplied by Kennet District Council will be emptied.
Q. - What happens to my green waste once it has been collected?
A. - The green waste collected from your green wheeled bin is taken to Compton Bassett and turned into compost. It is then resold onto residents via the Household Recycling Centres.
Q. - Can I share a green wheeled bin with a neighbour?
A. - This might be a good idea for residents who only produce a small volume of garden waste. However, residents wishing to share a bin with a neighbour are requested to make one payment and must register the bin to one property only.
Q. - Can I put cardboard into my green wheeled bin?A. - This service is only for the composting of green garden waste, therefore no cardboard can go in the wheeled bin. Home compost bins can accept small quantities of scrunched card or egg boxes.
Q. - Can I put raw kitchen waste into the green wheeled bin?
A. - Unfortunately not, legislation states that we have to keep kitchen and garden waste separate. Therefore we will not be collecting kitchen waste in the green wheeled bins. However, food waste can be disposed of in both home compost bins and food waste digesters.
Q. - How can I start home composting?
A. - Residents can buy
home compost bins at a heavily discounted rate. In addition, the Council is currently working in partnership to provide
food waste digesters from as little as £20 (including delivery).
Q. - I don't have room for a home composter, what other options are there?
A. - Garden waste can also be taken to a
Household Recycling Centre free of charge.
Q. - I have an assisted refuse collection, will I get the same assistance for my green wheeled bin?
A. - If you receive an assisted collection for your refuse and would like the same help with your garden waste bin, then let us know. We can then make arrangements for your bin to be collected from a chosen location on your property.
Q. - What if the crew forget to empty my bin?
A. - In the unlikely event that crews forget to empty your bin, please contact Kennet District Council on 01380 724911. If your bin was presented for collection by 07:00hrs on the morning of collection we will endeavour to return as soon as possible to empty the wheeled bin. Don't forget that the Council works until 22:00hrs collecting bins.
