Legislation

The sale of game is governed and restricted by the Game Act 1831 and the Game Licences Act 1860.  You may only sell game to a licensed game dealer, unless you yourself hold a game dealers licence, or it is for consumption on the premises  e.g. the sale of game in a restaurant.

(Copies of the Game Act 1831 can be purchased from Her Majesty's Stationary Office (External link))

The sale of venison is covered by separate legislation under the Deer Act 1991 (External link) for England and Wales.

For licences to shoot / kill game, please see 'Game Licences' link on right

Definition

Game is defined in the Act as: hare, pheasant, partridge, grouse, heath or moor game and black game.  Section 4 of the Game Licences Act 1860 adds woodcock, snipe, rabbits and deer to the definition.  Wild fowl are not classed as game and trading in them is not restricted by the game laws.

Two licences are needed to trade under the Act : a Council Licence and an Excise Licence.
