Weeks of Action - September

Top

During September, Kennet’s Community Safety Manager will be co-ordinating “Four Weeks in September” on behalf of a Wiltshire-wide campaign initiated by the Wiltshire Community Safety and Drugs Partnership. This campaign aims to raise awareness of some of the work being done in partnership in Kennet to keep crime down and make communities safe.

It also aims to encourage members of the community to work with local organisations in helping to improve and strengthen their community. The Weeks of Action will provide an opportunity to highlight the activities which are being carried out to tackle the key priorities identified by the Neighbourhood Police Teams consultations, i.e. Litter and speeding, alcohol related anti-social behaviour, youth issues and public reassurance/crime prevention.

The aim is to illustrate that through developing a joined-up approach resolving issues and problems which are brought to the attention of individual agencies, we are working together to deliver appropriate and effective community safety services and activities. We hope to showcase events aimed at improving public reassurance and in doing so, to improve people’s perceptions about the areas in which they live.

There is a huge range of people working to keep Kennet a safe and clean place to live and work: The Police and especially the Neighbourhood Police Teams; the District Council (i.e. Environmental Health Officers, Cleansing and Parking Officers, Leisure Centres, Licensing Officers, Housing Officers, Planning Officers, Community Safety Team to name just a few); Social Landlords ; the County Council (i.e. Youth Development Service and Youth Centres, Highways Department, Social Services, Schools and Trading Standards); the Primary Care Trust (i.e. Health Promotion, Specialist Drug and Alcohol Services, etc); the Fire and Rescue Services who work in partnership to tackle fire-setting and road safety. In addition there are many voluntary agencies that provide valuable services to support those who have suffered from domestic abuse, drug and/or alcohol abuse, homelessness and need help with parenting skills.

Community Development Executive Committee Chairman Councillor Paula Winchcombe said “I am delighted that this range of activity is taking place around the district and very pleased at the co-operation between all the agencies involved. Kennet is the safest district in one of the safety counties in the country, and we are all working hard to make it even better. I think it is important that the public are aware of the range of activity that is being undertaken to make communities feel safe, keep crime down, reduce anti-social behaviour and environmental nuisance in the district and keep Kennet a very safe and clean environment for everyone to enjoy”.

The activities listed below represent just some of the work that will be going on in Kennet during September. If you would like more information about any of the events, please follow this link to email Kennet Community Safety Team -  community.safety@kennet.gov.uk or phone 01380 734654.

LITTER AND SPEEDING

Throughout September, Kennet District Council are undertaking litter - picks as part of a national campaign organised by 'Keep Britain Tidy'.

Cllr Mrs Paula Winchcombe, Chairman of Kennet's Community Development Executive Committee , said: “The Big Tidy Up will be the biggest organised litter pick this country has ever seen. Kennet district Council is delighted to join the thousands of schools, businesses and community groups to have already signed up to the scheme. The Kennet District is one of the cleanest areas in the country and by everyone working together we can ensure it stays this way. I would like to thank everyone involved in the days of action and remind all that if you are interested in joining in the event the Council is here to help. We can supply loan equipment, advice and partnership support".

Kennet District Council will be working closely with partners and community groups and, alongside Sarsen, are organising a 'Tidy Friday' at different locations within Kennet on each Friday in September. Tidy Friday's are planned for Devizes for the 5th September, Pewsey on the 12th, Marlborough on the 19th and Tidworth and Ludgershall on 26th.
