Our current focus is the achievement of sustainable development in our rural communities. By this we mean to protect and enhance our natural and historic environment. Make land available to sustain economic development. Promote high quality design, and increase community involvement in all our planning decisions.
The unit has three sections which deal with the following planning and environmental functions.
Forward Planning and Transportation

Preparation and implementation of the new local development scheme and the statement of community involvement.

Preparation of new local development documents including a core strategy for the district, development control policies, area action plans, supplementary planning documents and local transportation policy.

Working in partnership with community groups to produce village design statements, development briefs etc
Development Control and Conservation
- Processing of planning applications.
- Conservation areas, listed buildings and tree preservation orders.
- Landscape and forestry matters
- Planning appeals.
- Complaints about breaches of planning control.
Building Control and Property Management
- Processing of building regulation applications.
- Management of the council’s property portfolio.
- Dangerous structures
- Street naming and numbering.
By effective management and a “development team approach” the service aims to stay in the top 25% of best performing local planning authorities in England.
