Council Tax Disabled Band Reduction

Top

You may be entitled to a reduction in your Council Tax if your home is the sole or main residence of a least one person with a disability and has certain features, which are for the well being of any disabled person.

To be counted as disabled for the purposes of a reduction a person must be “substantially or permanently disabled” (whether by illness injury, congenital deformity or otherwise)

The property must have at least one of the following features:

  • a room other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet which is mainly used by the person with the disability, e.g., a room used to store dialysis equipment

  • an additional bathroom or kitchen which is necessary for meeting the needs of the disabled person

  • sufficient floor space to permit the use of a wheelchair

To qualify the feature must be essential or of major importance to the disabled person well-being because of the nature of the persons disability

If you qualify for this relief, your Council Tax will be charged at one Band lower than the actual Band of your property (For example, if your property is assessed as being in Band E, you will be charged at Band D).

For a Band A property you will have your bill reduced by a 1/9th

If you wish to apply a disabled band reduction please contact the Council on 01380 724911 or follow this link to download the 'Reductions for disabilities' Form (pdf, 21 KB)
