The Environmental Protection Act 1990 places responsibilities on the Local Authority to collect, detain and dispose of stray dogs
All dogs belong to someone. If you find a dog it is not yours to dispose of as you please - doing so carries an appropriate penalty on a summary conviction - a fine of up to £500
Anyone finding a dog must by law either :
return it to its rightful owner (if known), or
inform Kennet District Council's Animal Welfare Officer, or
Any dog allowed to stray on a highway or public place may be collected by the Animal Welfare Officer.
The fine for letting your dog stray could be anything up to £5,000No dog will be released without a collar and tag
The dogs release fee will be £25 + the cost of kenneling + the cost of any vets fees
The Council is required to keep the dog for 7 days after that it may be sold, rehoused or destroyed
Dogs entering farm land or worrying livestock maybe legally destroyed by the farmer
The owner of any dog that causes a road accident, damage to a person, another dog or property is liable to pay any resultant costs or expense.
