To achieve Fairtrade Town status Devizes needed six or seven retail outlets selling fairtrade products; it already has six, and it has the three catering establishments required. It also needed to have a number of local work places and community organisations that use Fairtrade refreshments. Devizes Town Council serves only Fairtrade coffee, tea, sugar and orange juice at its venues. Kennet District Council also uses Fairtrade tea and coffee; three businesses, five churches and two schools use Fairtrade refreshments and the Wharf Theatre serves Fairtrade coffee.
Individuals who use Fairtrade products are being encouraged to display car or window stickers so that general awareness of Fairtrade is raised in the town. Car or window stickers can be obtained for free from Antonia Tolhurst (Telephone 01380 720571).
The Town Council has passed the necessary resolution supporting the campaign to gain Fairtrade Town status and the mayor attended the dinner for the official launch of the campaign during Fairtrade Fortnight this year. The dinner was also sponsored by Kennet District Council.
The application for Fairtrade Town status was submitted to the Fairtrade Foundation in London and the Foundation subsequently awarded the town a certificate. Our success was announced and celebrated during Fairtrade Fortnight in March 2007.
