The district has a distinct architectural heritage. It is important that new development reflects local distinctiveness. Government policy is increasingly in favour of using the planning system to secure high quality design. Planning Policy Statement 1 issued by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister – www.odpm.gov.uk (External link) - states that design which fails to take the opportunities available for improving the character and quality of an area should not be accepted.
For designated conservation areas further advice can be obtained by visiting relevant conservation area statements and appraisals on the Conservation Areas page, please follow here.
Further general information is given in Building in Context – New development in historic areas issued jointly by English Heritage and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment www.cabe.org.uk (External link)
For more detailed aspects of design you may wish to arrange an appointment to discuss your proposals with one of our officers. Further information detailing how to contact our officers can be found on the Conservation in Kennet page.
