Why should I recycle

Land Fill Vehicle

Waste is everyone’s problem as we all produce it when we dispose of things. Putting things into your wheeled bin may seem an easy way to get rid of rubbish but it is not the end of the story. The contents of your bin are not sorted.  Instead, they are taken to a landfill site where they may take many generations to rot, if they do so at all.

It costs money to collect your waste, transport it to landfill sites, bury it in the ground and manage these sites. This is a cost we all bear through our council tax.  There are many ways to reduce, reuse and recycle your waste, reducing the amount of waste created is the best option for the environment.  Reusing products gives them a second life and can save you money.  If an item cannot be reused it may be possible to recycle it.

There are many good reasons to recycle your waste;

  • Recycling saves energy and thus slows climate change
  • It saves water and conserves finite natural resources
  • Recycling reduces the amount of materials going to landfill
  • It reduces the loss of wildlife habitats from quarrying, mining and forestry
  • It reduces the emission of “greenhouse effect” gases from rotting rubbish in landfill sites
  • Buy recycled products to close the recycling loop
  • Glass, steel and aluminium can be recycled over and over again with no loss of quality
