Please follow this link to fill out a Hazardous Waste request form

Hazardous waste includes anything that could be harmful to human health or to the environment.

Typical examples of hazardous household waste include:

  • car batteries
  • engine oil
  • garden chemicals
  • bleach or other strong cleaners and disinfectants
  • asbestos
  • gas bottles
  • solvents (including paint strippers and thinners)

Paint itself is not a hazardous household waste but should be handed to the site operator or put into the non-burnable waste skip.

The list above is not definitive, and if you have particular concerns about a type of waste you can contact the Environment Agency (External link) on Phone: 08708 506506

There are two main ways to get rid of hazardous waste; Public recycling and waste disposal sites. Both will accept the above items - provided they are from households.

When disposing of any of these items at a site, remember to:

  • take all due care
  • hand the item or substance to a member of staff
  • not put any of the listed or items or substances you may be uncertain of directly into the skips.

Private contractors

The Council has a list of private waste disposal companies' which collect hazardous waste for a charge. Residents should conact the Council stating the disposal waste and the Council will provided their details. You can contact the company direct or, for a small administration charge, the Council can make the arrangements for you.
